"install" but I seem to recall that I was logged out. (Probably as
the install was already running via the other login.)

Maybe the documentation mentions so other username that I could have
used and I missed it. Or perhaps I should have thought of trying
again after the first few steps when the root and user accounts were
created.

installer/install worked for me to open a shell via SSH, before it created the root/user accounts (I was having difficulty with disk partitioning...see below).

*MY* problems with the Slug were simply that, of the 4 IDE drives I had lying around to use with a USB-IDE cable, only two spun up and only one of those actually wrote data consistently without errors. Other than that minor detail everything went quite smoothly, if slowly, for me.
