Bug#411319: Hang at "Creating device files"

Sounds very strange that I'd get the same error on two

error out on the same place over a random HW issue.
The kernel somehow managing to put it in an invalid
state?

Ok, perhaps you could try this:

When apt hangs, change to VT2, then run "anna-install strace-udeb", now run "ps axwww" and find the last apt process in the list, then run "strace -p <process id of that process>" and send the output.

Also, have you run any version of Linux on this machine before? And if so, did the CD-ROM work as expected?

Anyway, just looking at the log is this normal for a
DVD-burner ND-3550 IDE Black OEM?:

I saw nothing that looked out of the ordinary...
