Net install doesn't seem to work with manually entered ftp mirror.

When manually entering an archive mirror URL, installer chooses http by default. Entering the "ftp://"; prefix won't help either.

That is correct. You have to select the ftp protocol separately, but that 
question is only displayed at medium or low priority (low priority = 
expert mode), not during default installs.
You can also get that question asked by using <Go Back> at the first 
mirror selection question and then starting it again from the main menu.
Or you can use preseeding to set the protocol to FTP at the boot prompt 
(see the installation guide).
