Well the thing that make me not sure about doing that is that it has worked on ia64 and s390, and now it does not work and I don't understand why.

Also thge same happened on sparc for 2.4. That would also say we can't make sure we will still be able to produce smaller udeb for a given arch for a new version of the glibc. That may be very bad if d-i start to use this new space, and we later say that it's not possible to use -Os.

That said, it would be possible to do that for some arch only. Which architectures really need some more space?
