Comments/Problems:
This is a brand new laptop model from Dell.  It has the wide screen display, combo DVD/CD-RW drive. No floppy and the SATA 3G capable motherbd.  The installation fails almost immediately as it tries to detect the CDROM and asks for a floppy. The laptop does not have a floppy, so it can not proceed.  I tried to manually choose some CD ROMS from the list, but it fails as well.  Knoppix uses the 2.6.12 kernel and had no problem detecting hardware and working so this is strange to me that the newest test version of debian had a problem.
