Comments/Problems:

I tried an 'etch' daily build (25-02-2006) first, but it had problems with installing a kernel and with detecting my Broadcom 5751 Gigabit NIC. But 'etch' had no trouble with the CD-ROM (see below), so maybe AHCI support is already working in 'etch'? Since I already have had good results with 'stable' on my (other) Pentium 3 machine, I decided to give the latest 'sarge' update a try.

Upon starting up the installer, I immediately had a problem with it recognizing the CD-ROM drive (Samsung SD-616E DVD-ROM). I had read about the problems people are having with SATA controllers, and that changing the BIOS settings might make a difference. So I rebooted and used the BIOS Setup program to change the "SATA Operation" setting from "Raid autodetect/AHCI" to "Raid autodetect/ATA" and tried the 'sarge' installer again. This time the "CD" (DVD-ROM) drive was detected. And the 'tg3' module ran the Broadcom NIC just fine! Everything went absolutely smooth... for Linux. Unfortunately, Windows XP was configured to use an AHCI driver to access the SATA disks. Windows halted the boot when I tried it out, telling me that continuing to boot would likely damage the file system. I had to reset AHCI in the BIOS, restart XP into Safe Mode, uninstall the SATA AHCI driver, reboot, set the BIOS back to SATA/ATA, and reboot to XP to let it install appropriate drivers for the alternate SATA configuration. No apparent harm was done to XP, and it runs just fine now, allowing me to boot XP or 'sarge' without having to alter the BIOS settings each time. Also unfortunately, I have an ATI X300 video card which Debian 3.1 has no drivers for. I can run XFree86 using VESA, but I've already had corruption when switching to a text mode terminal -- though 'clear' took care of it. (No errors, no crashes.) I will have to compile a kernel and some drivers for the ATI video card.

I was worried that things would go much worse, but the DD's did a really good job putting 'sarge' together!
