Comments/Problems:
Let's start by saying that I'm no debian expert /and/ did not RTFM
completely (however partly), so excuse if I did stupid things.
I booted from the netinst CD-ROM without problems. Setting keyboard
layout and language was fine, but then it couldn't find the CD-ROM. I
saw (via one of ctrl-alt-F[234]) that dmesg gave "{ DriveReady
SeekComplete DataRequest }" errors. On the internet I found that I might
try use "hda=ide-cd" as an argument to the installer, which resolved
that problem.
The CD-ROM drive I use is a Samsung 48X CD-ROM drive, with no
CD-(re)write capabilities. It is attached as /dev/hda
I set up a machine with 5 IDE HDDs, 3 x 120GB + 2 x 160GB. For this the
machine has three ide controllers, one UDMA/33, one UDMA/66 and one
UDMA/100 (with the 160GB attached to the UDMA/100). LVM was created on
raid5 on 5 x 120GB, and (amongst others) / on raid1 on the remaing space
of the 160GB drives. This went perfectly, the installer understood raid,
lvm and even lvm on top of raid! :-). All partitions of the raids were
available on on /dev/ide/hostP/busQ/targetR/lunS/partT
Using GRUB as bootloader failed. It dit write into the master boot
record, but after restarting it couldn't find the installation anymore.
I got this working by manually configuring /etc/lilo.conf (on the
ctrl-alt-F2 console) and running lilo, and not let setup do the
bootloader thing for me.
Now when it booted the debian-base for further setup, it didn't
recognize its raid5 partition. I found out that there were no /dev/ide/*
devices anymore, only hd[a-h]. Is this a devfs issue? Anyway, I resolved
this problem by cd /dev; ./MAKEDEV hdi (and hdj, hdk, hdl). Apparantly,
the installer dit nog expect not more than eight ide devices (ie four
ide buses, ie two ide controllers). Why not make some more ide devices?
Now the system is running fine (but reconstructing the raid5 array ;-)),
thank to the debian community for the nice installer and debian system!
Regards,
Nick
