Well I guess you have to install testing or unstable to do that, or
somehow manually mount the /target, chroot to it and manually grab the
kernel package for 2.6.12 from the newer release to install.  You can do
that from console 2 before rebooting.

Most likely the reason it fails to find your root partition is that the
driver in 2.6.8 simply doesn't like your chipset (or at least the mode
Dell likes to run them in)
