Yes, that is the correct idea.
At the first screen after installing the base system (when you are asked
to install a boot loader), you should do the following.
- switch to vt2 (alt-F2)
- chroot /target
- wget the 2.6.12 correct linux-image package for your system from a
mirror
- dpkg -i that package
- exit the chroot
- switch back to vt1 and continue installation
