Comments/Problems:
Why install a new sarge instead of upgrade the existing woody?
-------------------------------------------------------------
I have been using the woody system on /deb/hdd for some time. It is
the result of a mass copy from /deb/hda (Not a good idea, but /dev/hda
was giving out nasty error messages, and I felt I had to get off it
quickly), and not everything was quite right. So I chose to install a
new sarge, rather than upgrade the woody system.
Install attempt # 1: (failed)
----------------------------
Tried using debootstrap (in the woody system) and the netinst CD.
This failed quickly with something like
"cannot download console-toolkits-<I forget>"
I tried again, excluding that package, and it failed again on exim.
It looks to me as though debbotstrap was using an incorrect list of
packages.
(repeat several times)
I then downloaded debootstrap for sarge, and installed it on the woody
system. debootstrap failed on a library dependency (libc6 I believe).
Install attempt # 2: (failed)
----------------------------
Tried booting from netinst CD:
console message:
"ISOLINUX 2.04 2003-04-16 isolinux; Disk error01, Ax=4224,9F"
Install attempt # 3: (failed)
----------------------------
Tried booting from Bin-1 CD:
console message:
"ISOLINUX 2.04 2003-04-16 isolinux; Disk error01, Ax=4266,9F"
Install attempt # 4: (failed)
----------------------------
Tried booting from Bin-2 CD:
console message:
Boot from STATPI CD-ROM:
1. FD 2.88 MB System Type -(00)
Boot failed
Install attempt # 5: (failed)
----------------------------
Tried booting from Bin-3 CD:
console message:
CD not bootable.
(Same results using Bin-3 and Bin-4.)
Install attempt # 6: (failed)
----------------------------
Then I found a note in one of the list archives that included this
note from "roach" - for which I thank him.
==================================== start ===================
Another one to add, some BIOS's don't like isolinux. If this is the case
you'll need a installation boot floppy or Smart Boot Manager.

==================================== end ===================
So I went to the manual again, and used the "Boot from Linux using
LILO or GRUB" procedure. It worked like so:
choose language, country, keymap.
ask for CD-ROM
scan CD, load debian-installer
detect NIC
-- hang --
(repeat several times)
Install attempt # 7: (Sucess!)
----------------------------
Once more I read the manual, which mentions trouble detecting fax
modems. So I removed the fax-modem (US ROBOTICS Model 0726), and the
second NIC card, and restarted as above. The install went as slick as
anyone could want. I choose the "desktop" type install. Sound works,
and Gnome is quite nice - In woody I used icewm only.
Hope this helps. Will be glad to forward any other info.
Regards,
Doug.

Thank you for submitting your installation report.
Installing using debootstrap directly is outside our scope, so I won't=20
comment on it.
The fact that your BIOS does not like isolinux, is something we cannot=20
help with. It's a pity CD2 also did not work for you (AFAIK you are one=20
of the first to have tried it :-)
In the end you found an installation method that was successful and that=20
worked for you, so we will count this as a successful installation.
Therefore closing your report.
Cheers,
=46JP
