I don't know if you plan to upgrade to LVM2, but I just wanted to
mention that you have several assumptions in your code specific to LVM1.
/proc/lvm won't exist on LVM2 with kernel 2.6, and the deves are
called /dev/mapper/vg-lv.

You can find out if DM/LVM is available with:
  grep -q "[0-9] device-mappedr$" /proc/misc
