Matthias Petz replied to me (thank you!) and pointed out that for

d-i netcfg/get_hostname		string jolt-debian-install
d-i netcfg/get_domain		string jolt.co.uk

to be set when the DHCP lease fails to do so, one must pass the
following kernel parameter from isolinux.cfg

debconf/priority=critical

Is there any reason why this has to be passed as a kernel parameter and
not from a preseed configuration file grabbed over http?
