The cause of that problem is almost certainly intermittent read errors from the CD-ROM. The "sarge" part of the path is taken from a file that is read from the CD-ROM in an earlier stage. Check dmesg and the logfiles for errors (from VT2). These problems are very difficult to track down. Some things that can be tried are manually unmounting/remounting the CD or changing the DMA setting for the CD-ROM device in /proc.
