Well, that should be filed as a critical bug against udev then, I guess.
Installing the package should not leave the system in a broken state.
IIRC, when I installed udev, it did tell me that udev wouldn't work
until the next reboot, but in the mean time I still had my old /dev
which kept functioning fine.
