Comments/Problems:

It is the 2.6 kernel that has a driver for the disk controller.
(booting with 'linux26' is the trick to detect hard drives)

The computer has several NICs, only had a cable connected during install.
To let debian-installer selecting the right NIC, I appended
"netcfg/choose_interface=auto", but then d-i failed on
configuring the device 'auto'.
(not appending what I see in the preseeding example
and manual selecting the NIC works fine)

I got "no space left on device" during the install of the kernel.
First not being able to see which device was full, it turned
out that I choose the /tmp partition too small...

At the end an installed computer :-)

Cheers
Geert Stappers
