The system hanging on the first dialog sounds like the keyboard is not 
responding.
I've seen another case like that where disabling USB helped (see the F7 help 
screen before booting the installer). You could also try disabling the 
(local) apic with 'noapic nolapic' and disbling acpi.

Again, this sounds like the keyboard is not responding. Can you access the 
system over the network (e.g. with ssh) if it is "hanging" like that?

FWIW: I have a Satellite A40 myself and have not had any problems with d-i so 
far (and I do test installations fairly often). It's running beautifully with 
a self-compiled 2.6.8 kernel.
