Here are the logs with a slightly different setup. The original problem
configuration had /dev/hda empty and the RAID on hde & hdg. Later testing
done with a hard drive on /dev/hda agrees with your XFS on RAID results:
the installer works up to the LILO install step. (Grub automatically
skipped and not manually attempted.)

The original drive configuration was just retested and the original
problem no longer occurs. It now fails at LILO install, as above, even
with the earlier 20040920 image. At this point I'll call the original
report a hardware glitch that disappeared after moving the cables and
cards around. (It happened twice that day but has not returned since.)

JFS or EXT3 for root seems to work in all configurations.
