I think you're wrong about the version of the iso you downloaded. Before
20040923 the iso was approximatly 17 mb in size, too bug for the usb
device. But the 20040923 build dropped that down to 108 MB, which fits
handily.

Redesign d-i. Yeesh. Please identify the design flaw..

No, the solutuion is for you to provide complete details about your
hardware and installation logs.

No idea what you're talking about.

unimportant to me.)

This indicates again that whatever image you used, it was not a current
image.

Please learn to include sufficient logs and hardware information to let
us understand and debug your problems.

As I'm not a mind reader and you provided neither the partition table
nor the names of the OSes in question, I hope you can understand why I'm
