Yes, aboot expects its config file to be named /etc/aboot.conf on the partition in question, and it must be on an ext2 partition, so the easiest solution is to put it on /boot if that is a separate partition. There is definitely room for improvement in the handling of /etc/aboot.conf on the root partition. -- Steve Langasek postmodern programmer
