Package: debian-installer
Severity: wishlist

I've installed Sarge using d-i RC1 on an old Pentium (I) system.
Everything went fine, which is good! There's one minor thing though: the
installed kernel was a 386-kernel, while it could have installed the
586-kernel image package. Might it be a good idea that the installer
detects the processor type and selects a "better" kernel-image more
suited/optimized to the specific capabilities?

It does, but the netinst CD that you (probably) installd from has only
the i386 kernel on it because putting all the kernel son it would triple
the size of the CD. If you want an optimised kernel, use any other media
than the netinst CD.
