Examining [1] the base-installer package code shows that the installer
does indeed choose an optimised kernel in some situations. However
unfortunately the resources are not available to build a kernel for each
possible variant. Since i686/athlon variants are the commonest, a kernel
version is produced for them.
I'm sorry that we are unable to provide an kernel optimised for i586.
