I ran through the install as far as the DHCP test again and this time it correctly reported that it did not get an IP address - I am not sure what to make of this, but I think I would write it off as an aberration, probably linked to some strange original behavior from upstream. Even if it were reproducible, it probably wouldn't come up often, would normally happen to folks capable of recovering and as you say, what would you do.
