Interesting; once you have a working system, it would be good to get
the full kernel messages with 2.6.

I'm not sure about this.  If you load the the ntfs module by hand
before installing GRUB, it will find your Windows XP installation and
offer this as an option when booting.  You can also install GRUB on a
specific partition, but I've no idea how you can boot this from the
Windows boot loader.  Maybe someone else can give more advice about
this.

Which rescue disk did you use?

That's probably because the kernel is different to the kernel modules
on your hard drive.
