This would mean they could not be used without partman any more.

This is possible but not very reliable.  Probably a better way is to
walk in choose_partition/mk/do_option through all partition in the
same way as this is done in init.d/md.  This check should be done just
before

open_infifo
write_line "QUIT"
close_infifo
