With an Intel ICH5 RAID controller running in normal SATA mode (not
compat mode), I was able to install d-i successfully and make the system
bootable with lilo. This did require hand-editing of the lilo.conf,
precisely because of the BIOS device mapping:
boot=/dev/hde
disk=/dev/hde
bios=0x80
