It is unnecessary, but necessary for the iso.

I suppose that anyone going this route will know grub, and I'm trying to
keep this section reasonably short. I'll bet that (0,0) will work 90% of
the time too.

Well, the netinst cds contain a batch script to boot the image on the CD
using loadlin. I considered leaving loadlin out for that reason. The
parameters should be largely the same, though the initrd will be
specified differently.

Top of the HOWTO includes paths and such.
