Akira! Thanks alot for continuing to work on this! I've been really
busy with anti-war activism, and I haven't done much on d-i on weeks.

I'm cc'ing debian-boot on this in the hope that some other people will
see it and want to help us make udebs for the graphical
installer. Just to be clear to everyone, I wrote a gtk front end for
the debian installer months ago, but we can't use it yet because we
don't have the udebs for gtk yet, which is what this is all about.

Akira, Your udebs look great, but since the last time I talked to you,
we discussed some more of the details here on the list with Sebastian
Lay and Junichi, and came up with the following plan:

It seems that for udebs with libraries, we need to have the
following:

- put the .so's into a subdir of /usr/lib,

i.e. /usr/lib/packagename/libfoo.so

- debs for libfoo and libfoo-dev
- udeb for libfoo-udeb
- debs for libfoo-udeb and libfoo-udeb-dev
- The latter two will be build dependencies for any other package that
builds an udeb depending on libfoo.
- the udeb libraries need different sonames

At this point, I have a number of udebs for the graphical installer
that can be found here:

http://people.debian.org/~mbc/udebs

But my udebs don't follow the above plan, and they need to. Since they
don't, they segfault because of linker errors caused by compiling
programs against the libraries in the regular debs and running them
against the libraries in the udebs, some of which have different
configure options.

So, if anyone can help us, at this point we have a number of udebs
building, but they need some more work, and we particularly need
someone who understands library packaging well.

Looking at your udebs, akira, it seems that they don't follow the
above plan. Can you change them to do so?

Thank You,

  michael
