It's sort of safe to remove expr -- then we will notice what breaks.
If it's code we can control, we fix it to use other constructs.  If
it's in essential code from others who are not willing to change their
code, we'll just have to include it.  (It's not a good idea to include
a watered-down expr, that could lead to strange errors.)
