This is troubling. I don't understand this. Was /etc/lilo.conf
written? Did you pick to install lilo on the boot record or to
install mbr on the boot record? Can you give us more information?

You should be able to use the rescue disk in it's rescue function,
i.e., boot with the args 'rescue root=/dev/hda1'.
I generally find that lilo should write to the boot record, i.e.,
boot=/dev/hda instead of boot=/dev/hda1. Check lilo.conf and see what
it says. You may need to rerun lilo.
Let us know, esp about that lilo problem.
