Why should it do that?
I don't require any modules for instance to install from CD, but I
still want the modules there, i.e., for autoloading modules when I try
to play sounds.

I assume you were using the 'compact' kernel?

Huh. I don't know. I'll look at it again -- I don't know that I
disagree but I think there are reasons it is the way it is, but
unfortunately I can't recall right now.
