just to clarify.  

1) boot from dos w/ install.bat (loadlin)
2) install from hard disk (resc & drv on fat32)
3) config pcmcia
4) install base from hard disk (fat32)
5) *dies* from cardctl thing

if between 3 & 4 i switch vt's and kill cardctl, i never hit the error
at 5.  i'm not installing off the net until after the 1st reboot.

always grab the latest, not current, so...
