Re: comments on Debian Alpha HOWTO

To update the folks on the Debian Alpha list, I, the Install Manual
maintain am (foolishly? bravely?) trying to *integrate* information
on Alpha booting into the Install Manual. This is a single location
where users are going to look for guidance -- a good manual is a
lifesaver; with a bad manual, users will get bored, frustrated, and
give up on Debian.

Now, I don't have an Alpha; I can only read about it and try to figure
out what to say. Hardly an optimal position for a documenter. If
you'd like to help, please feel free to just email me or
<debian-boot@lists.debian.org> blocks of text. Remeber, I'm not on the
<debian-alpha> list.

The document is just the INstallation Manual, but there are different
flavors; one for each archtitecture. That way, you don't get cruft
about expanded/extended memory in the Alpha version, but shared parts
(i.e., dbootstrap program) are shared.

Anyhow, I have a first cut of the alpha version at
<URL:http://www.debian.org/~aph/boot-floppies/alpha/install.html>.
This is not *close* to complete. It will be updated out of CVS
automatically, once a day around 4am.

Well, it's not for the FAQ, it's for the Install Manual.

Yes... I don't know if you want to really wait or not though. I need
to get much more information in there before it's really useful for
Alpha users. Actually, I would really appreciate the following, right
away if possible:

 * check the information at
   <URL:http://www.debian.org/~aph/boot-floppies/alpha/install-2.html>
   I have two tables in there which need checking. The first is
   Family/Model to code name for the sub-architecture (i.e., miata).
   The second (which will be moved down in the document) is whether
   the sub-arch uses MILO or SRM or both

 * section on how to partition -- is it pretty straight-forward?
   all I need are the alpha-specfic bits.

All contributions must be placed under the GPL.
