I don't have the time to follow the discussion closely, so I'll limit myself to a single point:- avoiding pulseaudio by defaultAFAIKS, there is absolutely nothing wrong with pulseaudio, except that it may get in your way when you want to start jackd.
Last time I checked (several monthes ago, I must admit), it was quite painful (or erratic) when using jackdbus. It might be better now. What I can say is that it's been a real trauma for many users, especially by UbuntuStudio users, and I know quite a lot of people giving up with UbuntuStudio and passing to TangoStudio or KXStudio because pulseaudio wasn't enabled (or was disabled) as default.
The proper solution is to fix jackd(2)<->Pulseaudio device reservation upstream or use a wrapper script like Ubuntu that calls pasuspender when invoking jackd. It effectively boils down to $ pasuspender -- jackd
back several monthes ago, pasuspender didn't work when wanting to use jackdbus.
Obviously, you can't ask an "audio-specialised user" to have to launch ladish (for example) in a term with pasuspender -- gladish. Not even speaking about laditray.
But it might have changed since I've tried.
I guess we could use such a script in Debian, too. Or at least change the default jackd invocation command in qjackctl. Cheers
