Should have been "localhost" in that case as far as i know.

Should have been in test.packages  (package xbase-clients).
(Take a look at x-basic profile in the profiles sub dir.)

If xbase-clients was in downloads, you should be able to
do a "aptitude install xbase-clients" while running the image.
Then startx would be there.
