Re: expiration of jessie-backports Release files
It seems to me like the more functional way to handle this would be for
apt* to prompt that the files are obsolete and unmaintained, and ask if
the user wants to continue. This is much more polite and respectful of
the user's own judgement and intent when using unmaintained files.
Consider the situation where someone inherited an unmaintained system
and wanted to upgrade it to current stable, which usually includes
updating the deprecated release to the last package versions prior to
the upgrade. Preventing people from doing this for their own good seems
a bit patronizing.
Of course, this would require modifications in apt*, which wouldn't get
backported to the unmaintained release, which won't happen. Perhaps it
could be considered for future plans though.
