If I understand correctly, the X modesetting driver works with the kernel i915 driver but not the i810 driver, whereas the X intel driver is supposed to work with both but has regressed for some chips supported by i915. If that's correct, only chips supported by the i810 driver (which are only found in 32-bit systems) still require the X intel driver.
