If I understand correctly, the X modesetting driver works with the
kernel i915 driver but not the i810 driver, whereas the X intel driver
is supposed to work with both but has regressed for some chips
supported by i915.  If that's correct, only chips supported by the i810
driver (which are only found in 32-bit systems) still require the X
intel driver.  Those are:

8086:7121	82810 (CGC) Chipset Graphics Controller
8086:7123	82810 DC-100 (CGC) Chipset Graphics Controller
8086:7125	82810E DC-133 (CGC) Chipset Graphics Controller
8086:1132	82815 Chipset Graphics Controller (CGC)
