Actually that driver's part of xserver-xorg-core now, not its own
package.

No-one should lose functionality.  We would change the X intel driver
to not bind to devices that are handled by i915 on the kernel side.  It
would still bind to the devices that don't work with the X modesetting
driver.

Neither of the X drivers can set up any kind of output port; that's all
handled by the kernel's i915 driver.  So if one works and the other
doesn't, it's almost certainly a bug rather than missing functionality.
 I.e. you should report this and expect it to get fixed quickly.
