I think you mean squeeze version here, wheezy (currently in testing
state, development release for next stable version) has version 1.9.

This sounds like a regression to me ...

If the issue is like you state, could you please file a bugreport about
it? This seems like a bug that should get addressed in squeeze directly
instead of working around with offering a backport that fixes the issue.
backports is a place for offering newer features in packages, not a
place for getting bugfixes for issues that are within the stable
releases.

I opened a report, but it was closed simply stating that "It's fixed in 1.9"

Later I discovered that general authentication was also effected, being I can't log into anything at this point. I didn't notice right away because of the high turn around time on SSH and IMAP session.
I feel that some of this belongs in the ticket, however it didn't get the attention this issue deserves there... Though I didn't relies the important status of this issue, the full extent was not visible at that time. I've upgraded the server and this has not corrected the issue. Any clients that have upgraded will also need to be fixed... I believe.
Can you kindly bring that up with the krb5 maintainers to track the
issue down and get it fixed in squeeze? That would be really
appreciated!
