It's not a fundamental incompatibility; I've just checked this system, and
I've got a fully-populated /dev/disk/by-path, running udev 164-3 and
linux-image-3.0.0-1-amd64 3.0.0-3. I'd say you've got some hardware that's
triggering some oddities, and that's bad, I just thought I'd add a data
point for anyone else considering it (or to help you or someone else track
down the problem).
