feel free to shine a bright light through the holes in my head, but it
seems that linux-image-2.6.18-2 is currently not installable on a
standard sarge distro. From aptitude, it appears that

1) linux-image-2.6.18-2 requires initramfs-tools (yaird is now
unavailable in backports).

2) initramfs-tools requires udev (>= 0.086-1).

3) udev 0.100-2 is indeed available, but conflicts with hal (< 0.5.6-2).

4) Only hal 0.4.7-3sarge1 is available (and anything significantly newer
would be somewhere between painful to impossible to backport to sarge,
I'm guessing).

I'm anxious to get that bright light,too.
I've got the same result. I can't update to etch yet.

Remove hal?
