linux-image-2.6.18-2 not currently installable?

Hello,

feel free to shine a bright light through the holes in my head, but it
seems that linux-image-2.6.18-2 is currently not installable on a
standard sarge distro. From aptitude, it appears that

1) linux-image-2.6.18-2 requires initramfs-tools (yaird is now unavailable in backports).

2) initramfs-tools requires udev (>= 0.086-1).

3) udev 0.100-2 is indeed available, but conflicts with hal (< 0.5.6-2).

4) Only hal 0.4.7-3sarge1 is available (and anything significantly newer
would be somewhere between painful to impossible to backport to sarge, I'm guessing).

Can't find any sign of someone with a similar problem (hope that's not a
clue as to the size of the holes in my head). Is this where someone says, "Why aren't you using etch, you twit?"

Best regards,

John Harrell
