Odd. What is the underlying filesystem type? And are you using fakeroot?

For uploading to the Debian repository it has to be unstable. If you can
make backports easier by providing dependencies that work for both (feel
free to use | to provide alternatives) that's of course a plus.

That's debatable. Running a deployed base of a hundred or a thousand
desktops on stable rather than testing makes good sense. But I digress.

Ideally you would persuade your sysadmins to give you a virtual machine or
three for testing various environments. They might not be too keen due to
the extra support load, but if you've got a good enough reason I'd expect
them to work something out. After all, today's testing is tomorrow's stable,
and they may have an interest in preparing for the upgrade.
