It appeared to me that the mesa packages currently shipping (at least in Jessie) don't have llvmpipe enabled. It means that all armhf devices that don't have free graphics acceleration (pretty much everything except Adreno GPUs) are stuck with swrast, which has an incomplete GL implementation, in addition to bad perfs. It means, for instance, that gnome doesn't even run on those devices. On the other hand, other distros such as Fedora ship mesa with llvmpipe enabled on armhf, which allows running more desktop environments. When the device is fast, it brings significant usability improvements. Hence, I wonder why exactly is llvmpipe disabled on mesa armhf builds in Debian (perhaps it was broken long ago?) and whether we could enable it again.
