Page allocation failures and lockups since Jessie on QNAP kirkwood NASes, even with 5gb swap-on-md-raid1 free



Hi. Since upgrading to Jessie, I've been experiencing frequent lockups on my
QNAP NASes (TS-419P+ and TS-219P) particularly under heavy I/O. Usually the
devices just drop dead (not even answering to ping), but today one crashing
machine logged some page allocation failures which were visible in the
journalctl log after a reboot. 

In this case, the QNAP running Debian Jessie was serving as a NFS server to
another diskless amd64 machine which was running a large apt-get
dist-upgrade on unstable, in paricular dpkg unpacking operation. After 
rebooting the QNAP Jessie NFS server, the amd64 machine's dist-upgrade
(which stayed stuck during the reboot) exited with stale file handle errors, 
and, as verified with debsums and "dpkg --verify", several files belonging
to the last ~10 packages being unpacked were invalid (containing null
bytes).

The QNAP NAS has two ~2.7gb swap partitions on /dev/md31 and /dev/md32, both
of which are MD RAID1 devices, on (sdb9,sdc9) and (sda9,sdd9) respectively.

It's now running an automatically triggered RAID rebuild on most of its MD
devices (and it also logged around 50x "clearing orphaned inode" in
systemd-fsck on reboot)

The last loglines on the QNAP NAS before reboot is attached below.

I also had similar hangs when moving ~20gb worth of files with "mv" from
one ext4 partition to another on one of the NASes.

Has anyone seen anything similar? It absolutely appears to be related to
heavy IO activity. 

This never happened during wheezy, so I'm wondering if there is something
with the new 3.16.x kernels in jessie that wasn't a problem on the old 3.2.x
kernels in wheezy for this platform?
