Forgot to mention in my procedure that I modified the UUIDs with tune2fs to reflect the old state.

Nevertheless the system did not start.

Perhaps an important 'detail': the new HDD had 2TB, while the old one had 1TB. What I meant with layout did not include the size, only that sda1 was boot for both, sda2 root and sda6 home.
