No, I sent an email to the package maintainer instead :-) He has fixed
the problem in the repository version of nslu2-utils
(http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-nslu2-utils).

Thanks!  That's really good to know.  And you've tested reflashing
those generated images with upslug2?

Yes. Just make sure that the version of the kernel that exists in the
backup flash image still exists on the hard drive (although I suspect
that if you did delete that version of the kernel, it wouldn't be
fatal), i.e. don't dpkg [--deinstall | --purge]
linux-image-2.6.17-2-ixp4xx until you have confirmed that the new
kernel boots.
