Debian no pretende tener todo actulizado sino verdaderamente estable

En resumen usa lenny que probablemente soporte tu tarjeta de red sin
problemas y aumenta por mucho la compatibilidad necesaria, como no
tienes mucha experiencia te recomiendo que ocupes la versión de 32
bits (386).
