Sad State of ATI Driver (was xfonts-utils missing?)

I mentioned I updated my HP Pavilion zv6000 series (zv6201cl) laptop.
The proprietary driver for the ATI video chip (XPRESS 200M) is still at
Xorg v6.9 whereas the new Xorg is now v7.0 and Debian has made
significant changes to bring the video stuff into compliance with the
fhs, a move which I applaud.
Well, I am back to 1024x768 instead of 1280x800 and Firefox disappeared.
Sigh!
