The truly simplest option, if you want to use this as a desktop, and wish to use nVidia proprietary drivers and proprietary 32-bit plugins (e.g. Flash) is just to use a completely 32-bit system. Alternatively, go for a *full* 64-bit system, with only 32-bit apps where necessary: you mention KDE, but that's not a problem in my experience. Firefox plus proprietary 32-bit plugins might be more of a candidate for this. I don't think that "many apps aren't ported yet" is correct assessment: AFAIK OpenOffice was the only 'major' application with porting difficulties, but I understand that even this may no longer be so much of an issue. In terms of performance on a desktop, you probably won't notice much difference between 32-bit and 64-bit, so using a plain 32-bit system might give you everything you need with having to mess around too much.
