If they are SATA drives, then they are on seperate interfaces (since
SATA doesn't have shared connections, well unless you use a bus expander
on a controller that supports it).

For IDE it is essential to not have more than one drive per raid per
channel.  You can run two independant raids sharing channels if you
want, but never put two drives in the same raid if they share an ide
channel.
